Uxtal has been forced to use Tleilaxu axlotl tank technology to produce the adrenaline-enhancing drug used by Honored Matres. Khrone tasks Uxtal to make a ghola of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, which is as sociopathic as the original. Khrone obtains the blood of Paul Atreides and has Uxtal make a ghola of Paul; he intends to use the ghola of the Baron to twist Paul's ghola into a weapon for Daniel and Marty's conquest of the universe. Later, Guild Navigator Edrik comes to Tleilax seeking Uxtal's knowledge of axlotl tanks; the Navigator fears his kind's obsolescence when the Ixian navigation technology becomes available. He seeks a tank-based source of spice to break the Bene Gesserit monopoly, but everyone believes that technology died with the Tleilaxu Masters. Eventually he accesses the genetic material of deceased Master Waff, and creates several Waff gholas, hoping to recover the lost technology. My biggest gripe with this book, if you can believe it, is that it's damn near impossible to take it and the authors claims serious that this was faithfully based on Frank's notes and outline when it has NUMEROUS references and tie-ins to their completely unnecessary prequels. Stupid characters and references to their books are thrown in left and right, and the worst part is the surprise "reveal" of the Unknown Enemy who turns out to be...the robots/machines from their prequels! So I'm supposed to believe Frank intended the villains of Dune 7 to be two characters KJA and BH would create 20 years later? I know Muad'Dib had prescience, but apparently Frank Herbert did, too...amazing.

It's much denser, much more clever, full of unique insights and wisdoms, and thousands of wonderful idea-laden easter eggs that sometimes never get explored but still make us pause and wonder. To strengthen their forces, the fugitives have used genetic technology from Scytale, the last Tleilaxu Master, to revive key figures from Dune's past—including Paul Muad'Dib and his beloved Chani, Lady Jessica, Stilgar, Thufir Hawat, and even Dr. Wellington Yueh. This book is supposed to be the ending of the six book original series that Frank wrote. He died before completing it, and they found outlines and are trying to complete it in his absence. Brian and Kevin, with the prompting of TOR I am sure, have split the last book into 2 parts. So there is no real conclusion in this book. JASON MOMOA as Duncan Idaho in Warner Bros. These historical records and holo-images held great fascination for him.

The reason I give this book two stars is because there were *SOME* plot points and scenes that actually did make sense and were enjoyable. Those are the ones that I attribute to Frank Herbert's outline and notes. Those are few and far between, however, and the rest no doubt came from KJA and to a much lesser extent, BH. It becomes clear after reading these "sequels" and the numerous "prequels" and "interquels" that, not only did they (but especially KJA) see this as a way to make some cash and notoriety off of Frank's name and the name "Dune," but it was never intended in good faith to be a true and faithful sequel...it was always intended to be a cash-cow tie-in/marketing ploy for their other books, which have turned a legendary and classic sci-fi series into, as many on the internet call it, a McDune or NuDune franchise of cheap garbage the likes of Star Wars, X-Files, Star Trek, etc (and I say this meaning everything relating to those franchises EXCEPT the original movies/TV shows, which *are* great). It's disgusting. Murbella contracts Ix's competitor Richese to provide armaments for a confrontation with the great enemy, but the rebel Honored Matres destroy the planet to cripple the Sisterhood. Murbella and her Valkyries successfully assault Tleilax, the most powerful of the rebel Honored Matre strongholds, and discover that many, including Matre Superior Hellica, were Face Dancers. Uxtal dies trying to escape, but the remaining Waff ghola finds refuge with the Spacing Guild, offering Edrik the genetic knowledge for the Guild to create their own sandworms. One of the themes of the book is also the war between the sexes. Many of the organizations in Dune are single sex, and they have a contempt for the worth of the other sex. It is really dated, and frankly offensive. Herbert's creation of this universe, with its intricate development and analysis of ecology, religion, politics, and philosophy, remains one of the supreme and seminal achievements in science fiction.” — Louisville Times on Dune

The interesting thing is that most readers familiar with this series will not have heard of the Enemy at all. It was introduced by Frank Herbert in the very last book he wrote before he passed away. And Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have taken the whole thing to a new level, connecting everything so brilliantly I am almost getting angry at the amount of criticism they have received. The novel that follows Duneis titled Dune Messiah.While many critics have decried the book for its bleakness, Dune Messiahis truly the story that starts to set the Duneiverse apart from other sci-fi epics. When the original Dunewas released, it wascriticized in some circles for beingjust another predictable hero’s journey about a prince who reclaims his power. In Dune Messiah, things get considerably more complicated.
